Marketing and Physics

iDEAS WORTH SHARING

Underlying theories of branding explained by Mr. Dan Cobley.  He is pursues both with a passion.  Heisenberg's uncertainty principle, the scientific method and the second law of thermodynamics to explain the fundamental theories of branding.  This video is courtesy T E D.

The brand distribution thru social media marketing gets your brand closer to the customer.  Learn digital marketing to promote your products and services.

The more massive a brand, the more baggage it has,the more force is needed to change its positioning. And that's one of the reasons why Arthur Andersen chose to launch Accenture rather than try to persuade the world that Andersen's could stand for something other than accountancy. It explains why Hoover found it very difficult to persuade the world that it was more than vacuum cleaners, and why companies like Unilever and P&G keep brands separate, like Ariel and Pringles and Dove rather than having one giant parent brand. So the physics is that the bigger the mass of an object the more force is needed to change its direction. The marketing is, the bigger a brand, the more difficult it is to reposition it. So think about a portfolio of brands or maybe new brands for new ventures.

Social Olympics = Socialympics

The International Olympics Committee launched a social media hub that will showcase tweets from the Olympians and connect them with fans.
2012 specially written for Netizens
At the Olympic Games in London, set to begin this month, the official motto of “swifter, higher, stronger” will be supplemented by a new label. If some marketers, fans and athletes have anything to say, these Games will be the first Social Media Olympics — the “Socialympics,” as some are calling them.  [Source: The New York Times, July 01, 2012].
  • Some athletes may spend more time on Twitter and Facebook than the playing field! At the last summer games, in 2008, Facebook had 140 million users and Twitter had about 6 million.  Google announced its adding another service to its suite of online tools.
  • Gmail Meter will provide metrics and analytics about your email habits such as how long it takes you to reply to emails whether or you more likely to write long or short emails. The tool runs a report on your activity once a month and delivers it to you by email.
  • Even the Olympic movement, which sometimes steps into the future with great caution, has warily accepted the idea.
  • Now, with more than 845 million on Facebook and nearly 150 million of Twitter, its no wonder some are calling this year's Olympics "the first social games."

Market-Facebook-Disparity = The gap between a brand’s ranking on Facebook and its real life market position.
  • Above analysis also gathers the information of how many Facebook users talk about a Page (= the brand), better known as “People Talking About”, recently introduced by Facebook.   This value is interesting especially for live trends, but it also defines the overall range of influence of a brand.
Bridge gap between Click & Mortar and Brick & Mortar

Brazilian fashion retailer C&A has an innovative idea.  C&A has found a way to bring customers’ Facebook approval into full view in its real-world stores.  C&A has posted photos of a number of the clothing items it sells on a dedicated Facebook page, where it invites customers to “LIKE” the ones that appeal to them. Special hangers on the racks in its bricks-&-mortar store displays those votes in real time, giving shoppers a clear indication of each item’s online popularity.

Social Media Marketing in Germany

Guten Tag!
European companies need to increase traffic to their website, to build a strong brand in India, and drive more online sales.  You need to be noticed, to attract targeted visitors in India.

Let us look at how social media is used in Germany:
  • Germany trails behind the US in adopting social media.  Blogs are not yet a part of mainstream media and have no significant influence on public opinion.
  • Only 58% of German internet users are on social networking sites (compared to 77% in the US).
  • The most popular social networking site in Germany is called StudiVZ, however Facebook is quickly gaining market share.
  • Culturally, Germans tend to be very private and do not freely share personal information.  Many still feel that their data is not safe online.
  • Germans place a high value on university degrees or professional certifications and do not trust unofficial sources.

(status as on May 2010)

Google’s First April News

On the eve of the Fools Day I remember how Google’s takes the world for a ride every year

Google announced Chrome Browser 3D version, Google told Netizens to download .exe file and even provided .PDF file to make instant "3D" Glasses, too much.  Would you believe?  Millions of people actually downloaded the 3D Chrome and the 3D glasses on the First April 2009.  Hahhaa ha haa..

Here is extreme example of cyber branding - Google announced popular Gmail that works with motion....Google told on April 01 :   "Gmail Motion is a new way to control Gmail using BODY LANGUAGE !   To us Gmal Motion software, you will need a comptuer with a webcam.  Google Gmail will recognize your movement with a spatial tracking algorithm.
We designed the movements to be easy and intuitive to perform and consulted with top experts in kinestetics and body movement in devising them.

Google also had a number of non-hoaxes on April 1. The biggest was the Gmail launch in 2004, something that many had thought to be a hoax.  For instance:
<iframe title="YouTube video player" width="100%" height="407" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/Bu927_ul_X0?rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Google's history of April 1 jokes can be traced back to the year 2000 when Google announced the launch of MentalPlex, when Google asked its users to focus on a swirling spiral and project a mental image of what they wanted to search for and the results page displayed humourous error messages.
MentalPlex was followed by PigeonRank, where Google claimed that it used pigeons for its PageRank system.
What is your guess?  What do you think Google prank will be on this April Fool's Day ?

Social networking best practices

There are 50+ social networking websites.  Let us take example of the most popular site 'Facebook' to learn Do's and Don'ts of social networking sites.  Here are excerpts from the lecture by Prof. Jyoti Zaveri and the related PPT explaining Facebook best practices.  Learn about security settings, Groups, Page, and so on.

DO and DO NOT of Facebook.
Points worth doing and points that one should not do, while using social networking sites, such as FACEBOOK.
1.       Do proper security settings to maintain your privacy.  Do not share lots of private information with strangers.  Avoid sharing information about your children or share minimum.
2.       Use private message button for one-to-one communications.  Post on the wall is seen by everyone in the contacts and if selected ‘public’ then by everyone.
3.       Join group of your interest to interact with your community.  You can request for joining by clicking on the button ‘ask to join’.  Your friend (contact on Facebook) may add you in a group; however, if you find that the group is not interesting enough, you may leave the group.
a.       Groups can be public.
b.      Groups can be private, only members can see the posts and participate.
4.       Companies (corporate) are publishing website on Facebook, called Facebook Page.  Visit a Facebook Page of a company you would like.  Search the name in the search window (on top) to find the page.  Click on LIKE button to follow the posts and conversations.
5.       Do update your profile with proper name.  Upload your proper picture, preferably only face.  Do not put picture of a cartoon or joker.
6.       Add confirm ‘friends’ only if you know them.  If the picture is missing or you have doubt, send a private message to find more about that person.
7.       Facebook privacy setting is the most important before you start using the Facebook.  Your privacy is in your hand, allow, or do not allow your personal information as per your needs, Facebook has nothing do with it, so you do it yourself.
8.       Limit you time on Facebook.  Do not get addicted.  Commit yourself for not spending over ‘nn’ minutes in a day or in a week.  For instance, “limit 15 minutes in a day or in a week”.
9.       Facebook suggests names of your friends on birthday, this is a good idea to be in touch with your friends, and wish them happy birthday.
10.   Avoid using third party applications (called Apps) on Facebook, these programs before you start using will ask your permission to use your private information by showing a screen with a button ‘ALLOW’, once you click allow, the Apps will use and share your information the way they want.  In other words, it is not Facebook but Apps on Facebook is sharing your privacy because you have allowed it.

Please share these important guide lines with your friends. Wish you safe and happy networking.
You may suggest some points that I have missed out in the comments box provided below.
